Catena-X Traceability

Traceability in the Automotive Supply Chain

Transparency as a Competitive Advantage – Traceability with Catena-X

Automotive suppliers face the challenge of meeting increasingly strict requirements for quality, sustainability, and verifiable traceability across the supply chain. OEMs no longer expect only flawless processes and certified quality management systems in line with IATF 16949 – they are increasingly demanding end-to-end transparency regarding the origin, processing, and sustainability of materials and components. Companies that fail to meet these expectations risk being excluded from the supply chain in the future.

In reality, each partner uses different IT systems, data formats, and processes. Information often remains locked in silos, and traceability typically ends at the factory gate. At the same time, the European Supply Chain Act is increasing pressure to make the entire supply chain documentable and auditable.

Catena-X offers a solution: an open, secure, and standardized data ecosystem that connects companies across the automotive industry. By connecting to Catena-X, suppliers can share data in a sovereign manner, implement traceability use cases, and create transparency “at the push of a button” – from raw material source to recycling.

Consileon supports you with both the technical and organizational connection to Catena-X and guides you in implementing your individual traceability use case – practical, compliant, and future-proof.

Three Key Traceability Scenarios in the Automotive Supply Chain

Traceability plays a decisive role in three key scenarios across the automotive supply chain, where fast, transparent information flows between suppliers and OEMs about quality issues, blocks, and inspections make all the difference. With Catena-X, OEMs and suppliers can not only respond to issues more efficiently but also significantly reduce recall volumes and costs through end-to-end data on parts and batches.

We support you in implementing your traceability use case within the Catena-X context and turning supply chain requirements into real competitive advantages – by sustainably improving both your supplier and customer interfaces and your internal processes.

1

Quality Alert: Supplier → OEM

A supplier sends a “quality alert” message, for example: “We have identified damage in other parts from this batch. Please inspect this batch.” This proactive information enables the OEM to take action early and quickly identify the affected parts.

2

Block Notification: Supplier → OEM

In the second scenario, a block notification is triggered. The supplier clearly signals: “Immediately stop all affected processes related to this batch” – for example, due to a quality deviation. This helps prevent costly recalls or production disruptions.

3

Investigation Notification: OEM → Supplier

In the third scenario, the OEM proactively requests information from the supplier: “We have identified an issue. Please investigate and provide information regarding the component or batch.” This highlights how OEMs must assume responsibility across multi-tier supply chains, particularly given regulatory requirements.

How Traceability Becomes a Competitive Advantage for Suppliers

Transparency Across the Entire Supply Chain

With Catena-X, suppliers can trace the origin of raw materials, how they are processed, and in which components they are installed. This end-to-end traceability not only provides security in the event of quality issues or product recalls but also builds trust with OEMs and end customers.

Compliance with Legal and Regulatory Requirements

The European Supply Chain Act and quality standards such as IATF 16949 require comprehensive documentation and proof across the entire value chain. Through the standardized data flows of Catena-X, these requirements can be met efficiently and in an audit-proof manner – without additional standalone solutions or increased effort during audits.

Secure Collaboration with Data Sovereignty

Catena-X is based on the principle of data sovereignty: each participant decides independently with whom and for what purpose data is shared. For suppliers, this means secure collaboration with OEMs and partners, better integration into future supplier processes, and a stronger competitive position through active participation in the automotive industry’s digital ecosystem.

We Support You from Consulting to Implementation

Implementing the traceability use case is just one building block within the Catena-X ecosystem. Consileon supports automotive companies in viewing this use case not in isolation, but as part of a holistic digital strategy. Beyond the specific use case, we support all participants across the automotive supply chain – OEMs, tier-1 to tier-n suppliers, logistics providers, and IT partners – with deep functional expertise and technological know-how.

We combine a strong understanding of the industry with IT competence and support you from analysis and system architecture through to implementation. In doing so, we create solutions that not only meet Catena-X requirements but also sustainably improve your processes, data flows, and collaboration across the entire supply chain.
